Shouting in an empty bucket – about Lion (10.7)

Can scarcely imagine this being the first post in the sub, but hey!

My low-end-mac predicament:
I’m currently running 10.6 on an ’86 iMac C2D…which means, in accordance with a cute Apple tradition, that my OS choices are 10.6 – and 10.7. Not even Mountain Lion is available to me.

I tried upgrading this machine to 10.7 shortly after I got it. It was a disaster that began when I attempted to install Safari 6, and things went south so fast after that…. Anyway, I’m actually considering it again, simply because I have programs I need to run – and update; and that means, I need AT LEAST Lion, but I get ONLY Lion, with ALL its shortcomings.

So, I need to be prepared: I need to know what things are safe and unsafe, as I really don’t want to ‘invest’ another couple weeks repairing things if it goes south again. I need realistic assessment of the annoyance factors known to exist, as well as hard limits encountered in “the Lion notch” when trying to get out of 32-bit hell & into better productivity.

…and yes, I could save myself a lot of trouble with an extra few hundred dollars, but if I had them, I’d have to put them toward other things first – and more than once. So Hi from a new member, and thanks-in-advance for what I hope I’m about to learn.

I’ve decided to install on an external drive & play with that while I gain insight on Lion, hope that won’t stand in the way of the conversation
